We’re excited to open Ottawa Architecture Week 2019 with a Forum Lecture. Since 1969, the Carleton Azrieli School of Architecture Forum Lecture Series has been an inspiring Ottawa staple, introducing architects, designers, and the general community to the leading architectural thinkers of the day.
This year, Forum Lecture and OAW welcome the esteemed Rasmus Astrup of Copenhagen-based architecture firm SLA. Astrup is the recent winner of Nordic Built Cities Challenge Award – Scandinavia’s largest and most prestigious architecture competition.
In his talk, City Nature, Rasmus Astrup will discuss new ideas for urban spaces including integrated urban design, climate adaptation, and social cohesion. He will present SLA’s winning proposal THE SOUL OF NØRREBRO, which uses nature-based climate adaptation solutions to create new hydrological, biological and social ecosystems for Inner Nørrebro. This proposal builds upon Inner Nørrebro’s unique qualities and spirit – from the quiet beauty of Assistens Cemetery to the busy, urban life on Rantzausgade and Nørrebrogade. This integrated urban design and climate adaptation project proposes a robust “city nature” that averts flooding while creating a series of new, green urban spaces. The project also finds innovative ways to include the local schools in the development of “city nature”. It introduces a new natural solution which utilizes city’s nature biotopes to clean the waters of the Copenhagen Lakes. In his Lecture, Rasmus Astrup will present a series of SLA’s other projects currently being completed in France, the US, and Asia.
