Byward Market Building
Location: George St. between Byward and William Streets Architect: Richards and Abra, constructed: 1926-7
This two-storey brick market hall is the fourth one standing on this site, the previous three were destroyed by fire. This location has been Ottawa's principal farmers' market since the 1840's.
Named after Colonel By, it stands on a block of its own, surrounded by busy streets lined with market stalls selling fresh produce and hand-made crafts. Inside the building are more boutiques and cafes, with an upstairs mezzanine gallery and offices.
This welcoming landmark has been a gathering place for people downtown year-round, but especially in the summer months, when the indoor spaces merge with the outdoors.
