Belltown Dome
Location: Haughton Street, Britannia Architect: Richards and Abra, constructed: 1966-7
Little known to outsiders, this neighbourhood skating arena is well-used and appreciated. Its highly unusual exo-skeletal structure may come as a surprise when seen for the first time in its park-like setting, but once inside, it is business as usual.
The building was refurbished and upgraded in the late 1980's, while keeping the integrity of its structure and design. According Ron Keenburg, one of the executives at the RAIC (Royal Architectural Institute of Canada) Festival 2000 who oversaw the selection of these buildings on the Top 500 list, he couldn't take his eyes off the "Sputnik-inspired structure".
