Supreme Court of Canada
Location: Wellington Street Architect: Ernest Cormier, Built: 1938-9 /supporters.asp?id=2765
This modern-classical building with Art-Deco detailing is Cormier's masterpiece in Ottawa. The original flat-roofed Greek temple-like style was altered by the addition of the steep chateau-styled copper roof. The rows of tiny gabled dormers further diminish in size towards the top, giving the illusion of even greater mass to the building. Inside this roof was placed the library.
The imposing presence of this building and restraint in decoration gave the Supreme Court the look of severity that it demands. Behind the building is a wide terrace, where a superb view of the Ottawa River is seen from on top of a cliff.
