Ottawa Train Station
Location: Tremblay Rd. at Alta Vista Drive Architect: John B. Parkin and Associates, constructed: 1966
This strikingly bold modern railway station won a Massey Medal for architecture in 1967. The exposed cantilevered Vierendeel trusses supported by massive concrete piers give the roofline an unmistakably powerful character.
The interior's spacious open plan waiting area features a circular ticket office and a circular ramp down to the far platforms. The building is enclosed by a non-loadbearing glass skin that extend through the open steel trusses to the roof deck. Even the few solid walls are not allowed to extend above the lower chords of the structural trusses, thus giving an uninterrupted view of the entire roof structure.
