Architectures for the Neo-Tertiary City
New technologies, a neo-tertiary economy and globalization are triggering a revision of the post-Fordist industrial city. The challenge for architecture is to soundly react to the challenges of a society that is urbanizing at an increasingly faster pace.
Some of the architecture and urban theses on iconicity, landscaping and conservation need to be analyzed and recalibrated to create a context in which infrastructures will again become main actors in this new urbanism, characterized by a more disruptive nature. BioJosep Acebillo, Prof. PhD, Barcelona's Commissioner for Infrastructures and Urban Planning, CEO Barcelona Regional, Director, Institute for the Contemporary Urban Project and Responsible of the Chair of Culture of Urban Territory in Accademia di Architettura Mendrisio - Universita della Svizzera Italiana, Spain
Mr. Josep Acebillo was Director of Urban Projects for the Barcelona City Council between 1981 and 1989 and Director of the Institute for Urban Development between 1989 and 1994. Since 1994 he has been the Director of Barcelona Regional Metropolitan Agency for Urbanistic and Infrastructure Development, and since 1999 the Chief Architect of the City of Barcelona.
Central to his work was the planning and urban design effort which preceded the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. During that period what had been an old and decaying city was transformed into one of the most vital cities in Europe with a highly successful public realm.
In 1999 the RIBA in London conferred a unique honour - it awarded the annual Gold Medal not to a person but to a place - the City of Barcelona. Mr. Acebillo was one of the name recipients of this award and received an honorary membership of the RIBA. |
