This session is for architects who want to understand and apply Universal Design (UD) principles to their work. The workshop is a 3 hour, three-part presentation. Initially, participants will gain first-hand experience about the barriers that exist in the real world for persons with functional limitations. The second part will be an overview of UD concepts, including the seven principles of Universal Design, examples of best practices, and the implications of pending Ontario legislation ( The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) ). Finally, attendees will apply their new knowledge by working with colleagues to apply UD strategies to a design problem.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Experience and develop awareness of the barriers that exist within the built environment for persons with functional limitations
- Learn the seven principles of UD
- Recognize the impact of current and future legislation and accessibility design standards on architectural practice in Ontario.
- Apply the principles of UD to a design problem.
